Birth and Growth of Ecomarathon Inba or ECO INBA
At the beginning of the 21st century, in the Lake Inba Basin of Japan, there was a glaring lack of environmental awareness among residents in the shadow of economic growth and automobile usage. This was, especially true of Lake Inba, which, as a major source of water was essential to the survival of human life. Lake Inba had shown the highest COD level and, as the most polluted water reservoir in Japan, led to one of the highest cost to get "clean and safe water" for 1.4 million residents of Chiba prefecture of the surrounding communities.
Hajime Nishi, born in Kyoto, Japan and recognized as an Ecomarathon author had been experiencing and writing the reality of global environmental destruction as a result of his over 555 international marathon experiences running in 72 countries on 7 continents in cities, deserts, forests, mountains and polar regions. He was even certified by the Guinness Book of World Records on the basis of, “The fastest time to run marathons on each of seven continents”.
He then changed his focus to engage in slower running to gain a greater understanding of ecology issues. He created the term” Ecomarathoning” to fully describe the experience and enjoyment of running 1000 marathons in 250 countries in his lifetime. He also moved to the Inba Basin area from Shibuya, downtown Tokyo to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to reach Narita International Airport as he continued traveling abroad.
As a result of his worldwide pilgrimage, Hajime Nishi could not bear to observe and think about people, including himself drinking contaminated water in so many areas. He determined to take action to raise the consciousness of people worldwide to recognize that if the natural environment can be defiled by human then humans have the obligation to repair the damage by changing their attitudes and actions.
ECO INBA , based upon the principle of an eco-oriented, non-competitive, equal-opportunity Ecomarathon has been reported by foreign media as a unique sports event focused on the goal of "Clean and Safe water" as a major global Environmental issue of the 21st century from Japan, a home country of Cosplay. For those not familiar with “Cosplay”, it is short for “costume play”. According to Wikipedia, it is a costume event not based upon a specific holiday or custom but, rather, the object is interpretation in which one tries to adopt a costume to represent a character or role to convey a particular message. In this case, restoring and maintaining the local environment
With ECO INBA as a model, the goal is to also to develop a chain reaction with more cities, towns and villages around the globe taking the initiative to organize Ecomarathon events. Such events can contribute to deepen mutual cultural understanding, the environmental awareness, improving health, regional commercial and agricultural development, international friendship and the positive youth influences.
By the middle of 21st century, offering 1000 Ecomarathons events have been established as a goal in 250 countries and regions with a total of 10 million participants, all brought about by a highly socio-responsible sports event to keep benefitting the world’s environment and it’s people. One People, One Planet and Ecomarathoning…growing globally!
